Re: 844 bezel insert *pic now included* *PIC*
In Response To: Re: 844 bezel insert ()

Thanks very much for the reply and the info, Stewart! Very much appreciated. the current original bezel is still in decent shape, though the inner edge is a tad bit worn all the way around (which actually resembles the appearance of an inner steel ring to my eye) as well as a few rubs and scratch marks. Still, for it's age I think it looks quite good. I'd be interest in doing a very sympathetic original restoration, which is why I'd prefer genuine parts, if possible. That said, I'd certainly consider using an aftermarket bezel insert if the fit and finish is good, especially since I'd plan to keep the original bezel as well in case I ever decide to re-sell the watch.

Any thoughts for/against a slight restoration, that would include re-finishing the case, re-luming the original hands (custom color to match the patina), and replacing the bezel insert?? The current steel bracelet is aftermarket and I'm not very fond of it, so I'll also be putting the 844 on a new red zulu strap (which is already en route).

Best,
DK

: David,
: You are right, they are hard to find, near on impossible in NOS
: condition.
: Something to note.. The Monnins and some very early 844s had a
: different bezel to the 'regular' 844s and quartz versions.
: You'll see that yours probably does not have an inner steel ring
: between the insert and the glass, but the later versions did.
: You have a couple of aftermarket options..
: A Rolex Sub insert will fit, but you'll need to sand the inner edge
: of it.
: The other option is... There is a French ebayer that sells parts;
: cases, dials etc to build your own sterile diver watch. He sells
: cases similar to the 844. They are different, with a larger lug
: width, but they come with a bezel + insert that look like a dead
: match to the Monnins. I did buy one to check it out, but haven't
: got around to measuring it yet. Cost was aroun 80 euros I think.
: Yes they are aftermarket, but a good option to restore a watch.

: I'll post a link to the ebayer tomorrow.
