Please help. OTD Backplates.

I have been offered an 'original' double backplate. I know from OTD that singles are 2.25 inches square and 34 or 38mm thick. But I cannot see the length of a double, which on the OTD photos appear not to be 4.5 inches long. Can you guys please confirm how I tell an original? I have seen the new rally pairs on ebay at 58x 113mms.
I have also seen a period pair with circular machined indentations on the backs.

Back in the day, if at all, when did the machining change from imperial to metric?
Any help much appreciated.
David
