WHY 4 DASH MOUNTING HOLES?

I have a 'genuine' backplate with 6 holes drilled for the small cheesehead screws at 6x 60 degrees (not the 4 at the corners) but cannot find a Dash Timer which needs 4 holes, only 3. Which dash timers needed 4 holes to mount into the circular recess?
The only other lateral reason I can think of is that the backplate could be mounted at 180 degrees, but this seems ridiculous.
Can anyone help please?
David
