Scan Weekend (Nov 15) – Three Watches to Wear Forever

A few weeks ago, I met a watch friend for lunch, and packed a briefcase with some watches, to take along. I posted a photo of the briefcase in a few spots, and showed the photo to a couple of friends. This photo evoked a question that we often get as watch collectors, “Which is your favorite?” or “If you could only keep one watch, which would it be?”

It’s been some time since we had a scan day with a theme, so I thought that it might be interesting raise this question for our readers. But rather that suggesting that you name only one favorite watch, we will let you select three watches, as follows:

  • You can have only three watches for the rest of your life.
  • The watches must be in your collection now (or on a realistic short list for acquisition . . . so please do not name the dream watches that are not attainable, but it’s OK to name one that you expect to acquire in the near term)
  • No need to consider investment potential or resale prices . . . let’s assume that you will be buried with the three watches; so no need to worry about what they may be worth at the end of your days.

It seems to me that a collection of three watches should make the decision considerably easier than if you could keep only one watch. You might consider:

  • three different styles – dress, sport and beater
  • three different brands or models – Heuer, Omega and Rolex or Autavia, Carrera or Monaco
  • three different complications – simple time-of-day watch, chronograph and a dive watch
  • how about country of origin – Swiss, German and Japanese
  • three different types of movements – manual-wind, automatic and quartz
Of course, there’s no need to think of styles and categories – you can just think of the three watches that you really enjoy wearing.

If you are so inclined, you can be tougher on yourself and narrow the field of three watches to only one watch. But no need to put yourself through this if it becomes traumatic. We will let you have three watches. If you like, you can also list numbers 4, 5, 6, 7, etc., as many as you like, so long as you give us the top three.

Let’s start the Scan Weekend this Friday, November 15, and we can keep posting through Monday, November 18. Please use the subject line, “Three Watches to Wear Forever”, “Three Watches” or something similar.

As always, we will keep it relaxed – post photos if you can, but photos are not essential. If you prefer some variation on our “rules”, that will be OK. If you don’t like the theme, then create your own – three favorite cities, buildings, TV shows, bands, cars or foods.

We are looking forward to some interesting postings, starting on Friday, November 15th.

Jeff
