Hmmm, the daughter product of tritium is Helium3, which isn't radioactive (but is, of course, a gas). Tritium is a fairly weak beta emitter, so it's unlikely to be that directly. It could be that the beta particles free something in the lume, there will be an oil of some sort in the bonding agent.
