I don't think your watchmaker did anything wrong. It can't be accidentally converted. The movement was most likely swapped at some point.

You are going to need the following parts replaced in order to have your chronograph working properly:

8000/3 bestfit X5942 Chrono Seconds Gear
8040 bestfit X5944 Chrono Minute gear
8120 bestfit X5924 Sliding Gear
