Hello Jeff,
I noticed that little difference too, but I thought it's just some random production differences.
But what I just now noticed that the dials are also different. Please have a look at the watches from the entry post:
The Indy Carrera has a different font to the unmarked one with wider lume hands. The numerals in the subregister on the standard Carrera are much thinner than on the Indy Carrera. Also the Heuer shield and the Carrera logo differs.
The two normal Datos have also different dials. While the upper one has a T dial and a very thin print of the Heuer shield, the lower example features a no T dial with a thicker print of the Heuer shield. The subregister seem to have different diameters, because the gap between the marker and the subregister looks different.
Back to the hand question.
Here is a picture of an early Dato, I owned once (well we all make mistakes :-( )
It has the small lume hands, so I guess the small lume hands are earlier versions than the wide lume hands.
