In a message posted above, EM asks for some details and information regarding the fakes. I am not as familiar with the Leonidas fakes as I am with the Heuer fakes, so here is one of the three fakes and some comments. Go to the OnTheDash Gallery of Fakes for additional photographs.
Some elements that suggest fakery include the following:
- Heuer never used a dial marked "Incabloc Chronograph"
- Heuer never used these hands (squared tips)
- Heuer never used this case
- Heuer never used white needles on the white registers
- bezel insert is missing
- needles are mismatched
The list goes on and on, and gets longer when you look at the movement.
If you go through the old catalogs, and go through OnTheDash, and the chronograph doesn't match up with anything you see, you should be suspicious. When you notice that every element of the chronograph is "wrong", then you know you are looking at a fake.
Thanks for the question / suggestion . . . it's good to keep some perspective on these fakes and how we acquire knowledge about them.
