surfing the web I've found this interesting document about "The Practical Lubrication of Clocks and Watches", dated 2007, from BHI Ltd (British Horological Institute Limited), IMHO very useful as starting point to understand the basic know-how about the lubrication and the differences among the various oil types and their applications.
