I just love the first few sentences of the Hodinkee posting:
The world of vintage Rolex collecting is the murkiest, seediest, and ugliest realm of watch collecting there is. There are more fake Rolex watches on this planet than all other fakes combined – and you can multiply that number by 100 if we include those Rolexes that have been modified in some way after they left the factory. But, it can also be the most rewarding when you discover something new, which happens more often in this world than anywhere else.
Vintage Rolexes and vintage Heuers share many of these same types of "mysteries" . . . questions that we may never be able to answer. Rarest prototype or nastiest fake . . . who can be certain!!

: This reminds of what's going on with the black Newman Rolex Daytona. Some theorize the Rolex dial was modified by the dial maker (Singer), and maybe something similar happened here?
