Re: Posting: Remember the Good Old Days . . . Before OnTheDa

Dear Jeff, it was great to chat yesterday, and first of all I wanted to echo everyone else's thanks and appreciation for all the hard work and no doubt the huge number of bill-able hours you must have put into this website (its rather unusual, certainly in my line of work to find a lawyer not charging for his time!). This is a fantastic resource and pretty unique in terms of the quality of content, and the quality of discussion compared to many of the forums that exist on the internet.
I must admit that my account with the forum is hugely in deficit as I have spent many hours over the years reading the comments, and contributed very little - cars, a young family and sleep always seem to get in the way...And reading some of the discussions recently I am pretty sure everyone on there has a much higher level of knowledge about the Heuer's than I do despite having started collecting them, along with you, maybe 18 years ago. (There was a bit of a lull after my 16th birthday Daytona where I got rather distracted by some of the lesser brands such as Rolex, Patek etc.).

Sadly the two cars you pictured, the Lusso (proudly wearing its Heuer's that were put to good use on many events), and the f40, along with some of the Heuer's, are long gone...so like that Steve Mcqueen Monaco we both so nearly owned, my track record for investing in the really important things in life seems to be rather poor! The only defence I have I that every time one goes it does get replaced by something else interesting, and as I said on the phone I actually think the chase and the early experience of getting to know each of the cars and watches is probably the best part, and trying something new is always interesting.

I also understand your reticence about going back to buy something that is now 4 or 5 times more expensive that it was when you last sold it, but I do think with this sort of interest, collectors that are very close to a market often ignore the bigger picture..and in this case we have seen huge growth in high net worth individuals over the past decade and I think this has fuelled the appreciation in a lot of collectable assets especially the really high profile ones... Maybe we should just be grateful that Heuer's are not yet seen as an overt sign of wealth or good taste like many of the objects favoured by a lot of the new wealth around the world..otherwise those Sifferts might just be 10x the current price.

Once again thanks so much for providing a huge service to this community, and thanks to all the others out there that regularly post on the forum..I have met some really good people though this hobby and your website, and you never know I might even make it to Georgia one day.

I'm off for a quick peak at ebay now, although as you say...its just not like it used to be.

With best wishes

Nick
