Why do racers need a tachy?

Unless you race over a measured distance (Bonneville?) a tachy in an appropriate base is no more useful than a decimal dial.
If you are seeking which lap is fastest, either dial will do the job. If you are a timekeeper you will always measure in hundredths. (Thousanths nowadays!)
