Two takes on the same idea. As a designer, this is one of the reasons why I love watches so much. The design of these two objects are so similar, and they do the exact same things, yet when you dive into the details they are very different. Look closely and you'll begin to notice how small differences have big impacts on how the designs feel.

People often hold up the Porsche 911 as the shining example of enduring design. A 911 from 1965 and 2015 are clearly of the same bloodline. 50 years has morphed the 911 into a modern car, but it's still a 911. But there's another example - perhaps an even more enduring one. The Rolex Submariner. The Submariner traces its roots back to the 50s, but this 5512 example on the left from 1967 is nearly 50 years old. The modern watch on the right from 2015 (ref 114060) clearly came from the vintage model on the left. Further, the early Submariner design has influenced dozens of other dive watch designs, while the 911 has mostly influenced itself. Nothing else looks like a 911, but dozens of modern watches look like Submariners from the 60s. Truly the mark of design excellence.

Never underestimate asymmetry. The Heuer Carerra 3147N from the mid-60s. Easily one of the best Carrera references ever designed.
