I have been giving this article a lot of thought. When I first read the headline I thought to myself that most bankers I know like watches for a completely different reason than I do. Bankers just care about what people will think about what’s on their wrist. They don’t get the whole heritage of a fine watch…right?
Then I read the author’s characterizations of the kind of people who wear this or that watch and I thought, what a dick. I have a completely different reason for wearing watches than he does. I could care less if someone thinks I am a dweeb for wearing an IWC…right?
Then I read the comment about Hublot…”the world is full of idiots and Eurotrash bankers”…and I agreed. I’d never be caught dead with a big bling Hublot on my wrist…would I?
Then I read him saying that the Blankpain Aqua Lung was his favorite watch…and I started to like him a little.
Then I thought a bout the 4 different watches I have worn this week…and why I have worn them…different occasions…different people I was seeing.
Then I thought maybe I am not really so different. Maybe I have some different/other motivations. Maybe I know more history. Maybe the technology means more to me…but in the end maybe I have more in common with the banker set than I want to believe. I do care that they look cool on my wrist. I do imagine that people look at them. In the end they are jewelry…too.
