I have mechanical aptitude and have worked on cars and industrial machines from time to time. This looks like work to me. I will never be so brave with a watch as you (and the professional watchmakers) are. I did enjoy reading your post, but what it really did for me is (as you suggested) it gave me patience and appreciation for when I do send a watch for service.
