As PVD easily wears off, some owners choose to get away with it when it's become too battered and get the case sandblasted or to some other non-PVD finish - I once owned one that had been polished by its previous owner. The caseback may have been switched later or the whole movement may have been recased as the case is the same for the Pasadena and the 510.501 - but none of then had this of finish when new (the pewter one which was the closest had a pewter PVD).
