The Seiko 7016 is interesting, not just a copycat design of the bold square Monaco we all are so familiar with, but it is also a technical feat accomplished by Seiko.

In terms of specifications the 7016A is a 17 jewel calibre that beats at 21,600bph (6 beats/sec). Sizewise, it is 27mm in diameter and at only 6.4mm high, it was the world’s thinnest vertical clutch chronograph until F. Piguet released the 5.5mm high cal. 1185 in 1987.

Apart from this thinnest automatic chronograph being made, I believe this was the first single counter chronograph that shows an hour and minute register all in one. There were talks that the Patek 5780 was possibly inspired by this humble Seiko.

Build wise, they are solid build and the case construction is probably "copied" from Monaco. But strangely I don't recall seeing gasket seal issue. Probably Seiko was using a different type of compound of rubber?

Overall this journey has been fun. The Silver/blue as mentioned is a true unicorn. Probably only a total of 3 has surfaced so far. The 2 JDM 7018 with the single register (on the rubber straps) is also rare, probably less than 10 examples seen?
The gold/brown is also pretty uncommon. And of course one of the challenge is not just to find all of them, but the thrill of getting the right specimen is like finding the fattest premium tuna amongst tunas.
