Let's Discuss -- Brands, Heritages, Re-Issues, Homages, Etc.
With TAG Heuer introducing the new Monza today at Baselworld, and the Autavia Cup competition getting started tomorrow, it seems like the right time to ask some questions about the watch brands (and particularly TAG Heuer) and their uses of heritage / history / classic watches / re-issues:- What do we want a brand like TAG Heuer to do, in terms of the great models from the 1960s and other eras?
- Do we want literal / identical re-issues or do we want to see new models that are only "inspired by" the old ones?
- Or should they use the great names from the past, but leave the old-looking watches alone?
- What are the keys to successful re-issues or homage models -- build quality / vintage size and feel / etc?
- As a vintage enthusiast, is there anything that might motivate you to buy a new re-issue?
- What should the brand avoid, in considering re-issues / classics / homages?
- Which brands are handling the re-issues well and which ones are struggling? And why?
I can assure you that the folks in La Chaux-de-Fonds are monitoring the reactions to the Autavia Cup announcement, so shout out your thoughts!!
