: Not much down force in those cars! They were very brave men.
Neil,
Driving at The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is not for the faint of heart. Here is an amazing video. It is a bit long but to me every second of it is fascinating. It shows Rick Mears who is a 4 time Indy 500 winner and one of the best human beings in racing taking Jimmy Johnson, 6 time NASCAR season champ around the track in a Corvette pace car. Both drivers talk about how each turn is different and about the completely different ways they set up their cars. At some point Johnson seems a bit nervous...the Corvette pace car goes almost as fast as his cup car and Mears is talking about how he never brakes or lets up on the accelerator.
It is hard to know speed until you see an IndyCar coming at you out of Turn One at 225-230mph (360-370kph). They get so close to the wall at the end of the turn that you just can't see how they don't hit it.
