...I'm far from an expert but have done some research on this previously. For clarification (in case of doubt) an item-watch or otherwise, will never be coated IN PVD-it is not a substance but a method used to coat items.

The substance used in the early days of the PVD process, was likely to be 'titanium nitride' apparently. I don't know much beyond this, only what I've read from various sources. Hope that helps as a starting point and maybe someone can build on this with a more in-depth answer!?!?
