Over on Facebook, Jon Krovitz reminded us of the catalog entry for the Orvis Solunagraph (Christmas 1973 catalog) . . . expensive at $195, but probably a good return on the investment. Yes, two weeks ago, we saw one sell for $50,000 in Phillips Geneva auction.
There is a dubious claim in the 1973 catalog listing, "Orvis worked three years on this development . . . " In fact, Heuer and Abercrombie had been developing this complication, for over 20 years.
