I currently own Rolexes (an Explorer and Daytona) but I really like the Heuer Monaco.
I’m thinking of buying a ‘Steve McQueen’ vintage one, or else the blue dial re-issue (the bracelet version), but I’m completely new to Heuers and I could really use some advice:
The register hands (and also the dates) on the new ones are often not quite centred – can this be adjusted - under warranty, or otherwise by a watchmaker?
If I bought a used one with surface scratches on it, could I get the watch refinished by TAG? How much would that cost?
What papers should come with the new ones and vintage ones – is it just the instruction book and guarantee card? I live in the UK so if I got a recent one from abroad, would the warranty be valid here?
The re-issues are claimed to be waterproof to 30m – is that reliable? Would I be able to get away with wearing one for swimming?
Are there any convincing fakes of the re-issues? I’ve seen some pretty obvious fakes on Ebay.
What sort of money would you get for a used re-issue if you sold one to a dealer?
Were the blue dial re-issues ever made with a ‘Heuer’ logo on the dial instead of the ‘TAG Heuer’ logo?
Roughly what proportion of the vintage ones have bracelets as opposed to straps? Is it difficult to find original bracelets for them? Do the new bracelets fit the old ones?
Is there a way to tell whether a particular vintage watch was originally fitted with a bracelet or a strap?
What papers should you get with the vintage ones?
Are there any reproduction boxes around?
Are there any good dealers that specialise in Heuers, apart from Werner Moser and Vintageheuer.com (especially in the UK)?
How difficult is it generally to get the parts required to service the vintage ones, and do they continue to keep good time if they’re serviced regularly?
Any help with all these questions will be greatly appreciated!
