No Good Explanation (Except Two Guys Wanting to Win)

I am not familiar with "Chronometrie Erbe"; Google suggests that it is (or was) a watch retailer in Basel.

The dashboard timers have been strong lately, but given the poor condition of this pair, I would have thought that they would have struggled to reach $4,000.

The only explanation is that two bidders both wanted to win this pair, and they kept bidding, with no regard for what we would think of as being the "fair market value" of the timepieces.

Of course, it would be interesting to hear a better explanation, but I am not optimistic that we will learn any more about these timers.

Best,

Jeff
