There was a named clue on the dial which i blacked out as it gave away the answer. The small window on the top shows the numbers 1-12 which are in the barrels on the top of the mechanism. When one of the keys is used on the top slot the number changes with a loud "clonk" and the time is recorded on the paper at the side. This is to record the time of each competitor.......
