Daytona Cal.12 question

I have an operational question regarding a Heuer Daytona (ref. 110.203B) with a Cal. 12 automatic movement I inherited from my father. The crown has two positions, 'out' and 'in'. Pulling the crown out allows me to set the time. My question is regarding use of the crown when it is in the 'in' position: When the crown is 'in', it rotates only counterclockwise, and appears to be locked (cannot move) in the clockwise direction. When I turn it counterclockwise, minor clicking occurs in the movement but it does not appear to be winding the watch. I have little experience with vintage watches, and my modern watches with automatic movements allow for manual winding of the automatic movement when the crown is in the 'in' position, to get the movement moving prior to placing on the wrist. It appears that this Daytona can only be wound by wrist movement. Is this true? Is this the way the watch should be working? - or is the watch in need of repair?

Apologies for the lengthly post; any input would be much appreciated.
