A few recent experiences -

Fedex and UPS charged around 25 quid customs admin surcharge on items where customs didn't make a charge.
I'm arguing with them just now.

EMS from South America - customs didn't believe the value on the customs declaration and requested I send them the Ebay/PayPal invoice.

Received an item from the US today sent USPS which arrived in the UK 10 days ago. You can track the USPS reference on the parcelforce website and then under further details you get a parcelforce reference which then gives info such as held at customs etc. You can then call them up rather than wait for the letter - saves a couple of days anyway.
