Jeff, I am following the AQ posts, I had a military watch collection hence I knew about the wrong royal navy seamaster 300 offered in the omega auction sold for 30K, afterwards prices for military seamasters were on the rise, Omegas involvement in authenticating the watches seemed not clear...
Quite honestly I am not really surprised by AQ reaction. A collectors nightmare if you buy a watch and find out its fake and they know it or have evidence given by specialists.
Very pragmatic approach, lets say I would not buy a pnewman if I dont know the history papers and so on, where you know that proximately 90% on the market have been worked on, as more the prices for heuers will rise we will find ourselves facing this problem more extensively not only on the cheap bottom end easy detectable put together autavias on ebay.
Bonhams or Henrys sells Heuers in nearly each and every auction, would guess they are more experienced than other auction houses with heuers to detect fakes or put togethers.
