Autavia aotomatic ?

Hi,

I have an Autavia cal 12 automatic chronograph, please ? can you tell me what 'automatic' is ?If i 'wind' the watch up it lasts for a few days then stops. Is this correct ? is 'automatic' just extended length of operation ?
If you have an 'aotomatic' Heuer does it stop after days of not wearing ?
I am only unsure because the watch is from the 1970's....
Many thanks,Grant
