McQueen Monaco Mystery

I am a long time lurker here but this is my first post.

I was travelling back from Brussels on Friday and to pass the time I bought a French classic car mag called Retro Viseur. In it is an article about the filming of Le Mans in 1970 with a series of photos by Pierre Honegger that he took on assignment for Time Magazine.

Among the shots was this

I noticed the Heuer Monaco, but I also noticed the strap

Now I'm no Heuer expert, but there's nothing like this in Arno Haslinger's wonderful book on Heuer Chronographs and I don't recall seeing it when Steve McQueen's Heuer Monaco was auctioned. It looks like an identity or blood group tag of some variety. Does anyone know more?
