I don't think the sell date tells us too much either, other than that it must have been made before then and I think it's that manufacture date that most people are interested in. Being model agnostic can help a bit - we see the first Cal 15 watches coming out in 1972 with serials around the 250xxx mark and other watches with dating evidence for 1972 a few thousand lower again.
