I am not a regular, but I did attend few NY Antiquorum auctions in the past 3-4 years and could see that, as usual, our friends at Antiquorum have done another great job in putting together the previews in the days before the event and then holding the event itself.

My general impression is that this time phone and internet bids from Europe and Asia were much more frequent and aggressive than the previous editions. Certainly the strongest currency, and now USD is not the one, makes you more intrepid. Although the room was filled with more 'observers' (like me:-)...) than bidders, the bids kept coming in. The final price of the lots might not be very far from similar items of the previous auctions, but I suspect that the recently increased premium to 25% could contribute to keep the watch final cost within the market range.

As per my personal experience, I engaged a very quick bid war for the Seafarer with a bidder on the phone. My last bid was $3,600, before being outbid at $3,800. In a nutshell, a NY resident (after premium, sales tax, and shipping) would have paid that Seafarer well above $5.5K. Slightly above my budget. I hope the winner will come forward and be part of the family.

I learned, once again, that sometime it is better not to rely completely on the pictures of the catalogs. Often watches in the flesh appear in much better condition than the catalog-photos show. The Seafarer was definitively one of them.
