I've never made my own strap, but looking at them it looks easy.. which, like so many things is most probably the complete opposite!
If I were going to have a crack at it, being a arty/crafty type, I'd experiment with paper models & a stapler first.

I've read that many types of leather can be used, from old shoes to WWII flying jackets. Get a decent leather hole punch, some leather glue & give it a go.
