I'm not sure it's that difficult to imagine actually. If this version:

was first, which I imagine it was given it is what is shown in the catalogue, it is only a minor change to the cliché to produce:

instead. The other way round is a bit more difficult, as it involves adding something rather than taking it away. I don't know if the serials bear out an order for the dial variants?

Of course, the mechanism of making the change comes into question, as the dials would have been printed elsewhere than at Zenith. But even for a small print run, it's quite possible they were in several, rather than one large, batches and Zenith would have had the opportunity to request the change in between.
