Hi Alex,
The advice given is sound, but there is so much variety to choose from, why not spend an afternoon going through the Vintage Heuer FlickR photo album. Most of the pics come from members of this forum, have a good look at what you like/don't like...

: Greetings - I'm a Heuer newbie but a Rolex tragic. Having aquired a
: couple of Seafarers I'm doing homework on my first Heuer. To
: narrow it down - Monaco and Autavia are the most appealing so
: far. Any advice/guidance on the first Heuer to get would be much
: appreciated. In return offering pics once the watch is acquired
: and free Rolex 5513 advice. Many thanks in advance. Seafarer
: pics to come. Best, Alex
