I lived in the SF Bay area for 9 years. May I suggest Lake Tahoe (site of 1960 winter olympics). I prefered the North shore, to the more commercial South shore. There are many cottage/chalets for rent in the area. If the mountains don't completely wear you out, check out Reno, Nevada (1 hour) and of course San Francisco (3 hours).
