I think you have it right when you suggest that the greater number of economy versions (Viceroys) on the market today stems from the fact there were so many more of these produced 30 years ago. The regular Autavias were selling for $200 in the stores . . . the promotional price on the Viceroys was $88 . . . Heuer could hardly manage to produce enough of these to meet the demand.

In the later years of Autavia production -- after the Viceroys -- Heuer made many variations, but none of them seem to have been produced in anyhere near the quantity of the Viceroys.
