Grand Central Watch & Crystal Replacement

After having a ~1948 Heuer chrono beautifully serviced for $400, the crystal fell out and was lost. I took the watch to GCW to see if they could replace the crystal and they sent me an email saying it would cost $1,850 and they would do the following:
* Complete disassembly of all parts of the movement
* All pivots and wheels are polished by hand
* Ultrasonic cleaning of movement
* Replace worn movement parts
* New mainspring
* New crystal
* New crown
* Complete refinishing of the case

The case and crown are beautiful by the way and in no way need replacing, and the watch keeps fantastic time. I've also seen pics of the movement apart and together when it was previously serviced and there didn't seem to be any issues there either. GCW refused to simply replace the crystal so I took the watch back. Has anyone else had this experience and what are your thoughts? Where can I get the crystal replaced in NYC for a reasonable price?
Thanks!
