About the Autavia 2446C SN Chronographs

Lately, there has been a lot of chatter about the Heuer Autavia chronographs, Reference 2446C, with the white / silver / cream dials. Let me share a couple of thoughts, based on the usual "things I have heard."

  • I believe that these dials are authentic . . . they were ordered by / produced for Heuer
  • I do not believe that Heuer ever produced complete watches using these dials
  • I believe that the watches were are seeing now use these authentic Heuer dials, however the watches themselves have been assembled / completed by persons other than Heuer
  • To my way of thinking, there is really no such thing as a "correct" or "incorrect" sample of the Autavia 2446C SN . . . so long as the dial is legitimate, and it is fitted into a 2446C case, then the person assembling the watch can choose the hands and bezel, to suit his own taste
  • I believe that the value is in the authenticity and condition of the dial, with the choice of these other parts being less important. After all, if the new owner or watchmaker prefers the Hour bezel, he can find a donor watch or a loose bezel, and have whatever he chooses. This one, assembled in 2015, will be just as legitimate as the one assembled in 1970 . . . or 1990 . . . if neither one was made by Heuer, then they seem the same to me.
  • Today's eBay bargain appears to have had a bezel from an Orvis Solunagraph [look at the style of the numerals for the 42, 44, 46 and 48] . . . not really a surprise, as there must have been some of these left over

If you have better information or different views, feel free to post it here or send me a message.
