Although it will not reduce the pain of your loss, your Dad has left you a very special timepiece. It is a 2nd execution Heuer Carrera 12, ref. 2447 NST (black dial with white subdials and Tachymeter scale). This alone is a rare watch, but the Volvo logo makes it extra special.

I can only confirm the advice given by GMT and John: Please do not have any of the original parts replaced (even if they look a bit patinated), and NEVER have the case polished. Not only would it remove the traces of your Dad's ownership, but it would reduce the value of your watch siginficantly.
