I didn't know that the Crosthwaite/Gavin book was out yet, I'll definetely check it out.
My comment about the serial numbers is about the fact that, apart from the case number (which is pretty easy to tamper with vs a movement number for instance), there is no way I can think of to tell two watches apart...
