Dec. 16th -- Let’s Celebrate the Carrera’s 50th Birthday

Heuer introduced the Carrera chronograph in 1963, so TAG Heuer has been celebrating the 50th birthday of the Carrera throughout the year 2013. We have seen some amazing new Carreras from TAG Heuer in 2013, some of them production models and others concept watches. In January 2013, in Geneva, TAG Heuer introduced the Calibre 1887 Jack Heuer 50th Anniversary Carrera (which in now available in stores) and the Carbon Matrix Composite Carrera, a concept chronograph. In April 2013, at Baselworld, we first saw Calibre 36 Flyback Carrera, which was soon in retail channels, as well as the Carrera MikroPendulumS, a MikrotourbillonS with two magnetic pendulums replacing the hairsprings.

Then, last week, TAG Heuer offered a surprise for what may be the end of the anniversary celebration, the Carrera Calibre 17 Chronometer (likely to be known as the “Jack Heuer 81” Carrera). [photo below, courtesy of Calibre 11.com]

In addition to these headline-grabbing Carreras, 2013 also saw the introduction of some very nice Calibre 1887 and Calibre 16 powered Carreras.

There were events and exhibitions celebrating the Carrera in major cities around the world and we have also seen some interesting “microsites” covering “50 Years of Carrera”, including those from TAG Heuer, Watchonista and Calibre11.com.

Some of us have been chatting and believe that as the Carrera’s year-long birthday party comes to a close, it’s time for the crew at OnTheDash to celebrate 50 years of the Carrera. Having enjoyed our spontaneous birthday party for the Autavia in December 2012, everyone knows how we should celebrate – with a scan week celebration for the Carrera.

Here’s the plan: We will celebrate the 50th birthday of the Carrera chronograph, starting on Monday, December 16, 2013, with a special scan event on this forum, running through Friday, December 20th. (Of course, you can feel free to post slightly before or after these two dates, if better for your schedule.) As part of Carrera celebration, you can:

  • post a photo of your favorite Carrera chronograph (or even a group of Carreras), and tell us about your choice(s)
  • host a local gathering and share some “table shots” and “wrist shots”
  • tell us a story about your favorite Carrera – maybe one that you found in a flea market or even in the trunk of an old car that you once bought
  • tell us something interesting that you have learned about the Carrera . . . maybe an item of Carrera trivia or some little known fact
  • tell us about your favorite current-production TAG Heuer Carrera or about the concept Carrera that you would like to see in production
  • show us your favorite Porsche Carrera, some item from 1963, “greeters” wearing vintage Carreras, or anything else that makes you smile.

We’ve got almost two weeks to prepare – so choose some beautiful Carreras, get out your camera, write up your favorite story and prepare your posting. Hey, everyone knows that it’s not a real celebration without the OnTheDash crowd!!

Jeff
