A Timex for 49.95 will tell time better than a $2K USD Omega (at least for a while). Its really not about telling time. High end watch are as much about style and making a personal statement (whatever that might be) as anything else.

I wear a $1750 'Bond' SMP auto. I don't wear it because it's related to a James Bond image or because it makes me feel macho... and I don't use it for diving.

I wear it because I like the way it looks and feels. I like it because in this computerized and electronic world we live in, I'm fascinated and appreciative of this small and highly accurate mechanical device which is not very different from similar devices made 2 hundred years ago.

I like the idea of having and using a device not worn by everyone else. Even though the ETA movement is mass produced, its still somewhat exclusive. Perhaps wearing a higher quality watch makes me feel more successful, even though only 1 in 1000 people recognize the watch. I don't care about that. I feel good wearing it. In that sense, its jewelry.

Most (but not all) of the benefits are intangible. If you want evidence that a 2k watch is worth the extra money I can't give it to you anymore than I can justify a $30k Patek Phillipe.

It comes down to what you want and what you can afford. Based on your comments, even $300 is probably overkill. You can buy a multi-function G-Shock for a lot less. I suspect you prefer the Luminox in part because of how it looks and how it makes you feel. Hmmm.
