: I've oft wondered how I fell into this unlikely
: "hobby"; my friends certainly
: think I'm nuts. I've traced it back to when
: I graduated from highschool, and my grad
: gift was a trip to Egypt. I decided to take
: that instead of the traditional TAG Heuer my
: father had purchased for each of my brothers
: when they graduated. Not too long afterward
: though, I found myself wanting a quality
: watch, and repeated begging of my father got
: me nowhere. He owns several nice watches,
: including a Rolex GMTII, and an old Speedy
: Pro.
: Finally, I started my obsession with TAG
: Heuers, starting with a Kirium I bought off
: of eBay; normal quartz model. I kept it for
: about a month or two, when I decided I was
: nuts, and sold it. A few months later, I
: relapsed and purchased a TAG Heuer Kirium
: Automatic Chronograph. Right after that
: purchase though, I saw for the first time
: ever an SMP Chronograph, 2598.80 (the blue
: bezel version), and fell in love with it. I
: purchased it, and a week or two later sold
: my TAG. When I got my SMP Chrono, I sent it
: in for a full servicing, and in the 2 month
: fine watch void of time in between, I
: purchased a TAG Heuer 2000 Exclusive 1/10th
: Second Chronograph. After I got my SMP back,
: it wasn't long before I decided that was the
: only watch I needed. That's when I truly
: became a diehard Omega fan.
: I proceeded to purchase 3 vintage wristwatches
: and an old 1903 Pocket watch. Not long
: after, I purchased the blue faced
: Speedmaster Day/Date. Now, I've sold 2 of my
: vintage wristwatches, and have entered a
: deal to purchase a Speedmaster Replica w/
: Moonphase. I sold my TAG 2000 to help pay
: for the Moonphase, and think I'll be
: sticking with Omega's from now on (despite
: the fact I can't really afford it). The
: scary thing is, every time I think I'm
: content with what Omega's I've got, I see a
: new one that I just HAVE TO HAVE. If I want
: to be addicted to something, maybe I should
: choose cocaine. It's certainly less
: expensive!!
Nice story!
Unfortunately if this had been me. I would have sold none of them.
I often ask myself how many watches it is practical to own. After all, you can only really wear them one at a time and if they need winding it can become a problem. I have never had too much money to play with so for this reason I dont have many watches(I wore a Tag 200M Divers watch(black teflon coated) continuously for 15 years before it packed in!). I love my Omega SMP "BOND" Chronometer and aspire to a Rolex SD soon. Apart from a couple of Vostok automatics that keep really good time I cant really justify the expense of any more(oh and an old KAYs silver pocket watch). I recently tried on an Omega Deville with stainless bracelet(the power reserve model)and fell in love with that too! Its hopeless, as you say. The only reason I dont take drugs is because I wouldnt be able to see the dial on my watch properly, even though it may be cheaper!
Best regards
