Make sure the watch is 'fully' wound. An automatic watch can be manually wound. Give it about 50 winds from the crown. You can't overwind it, don't worry. Where the watch 8-10 hours a day. The time loss may be due to its not being fully wound.
Once you've done this, 'then' test it! If the results are not satisfactory to you within COSC specs, then experiment with different positions. But remember, it 'is' a mechanical device and it's not going to be perfect.
