Actually you don't "see thorugh" the vials when your're sighting. They are just tiny glowing "dots".

I own several firearms (and several watches) that have the tritium vials. As I understand it, tritium and a phosphor are contained within the little glass vials. The tritium excites the phosphor and makes the glow. You do not have to "charge" these markers by exposing them to light as I do on my Omega.

These things glow VERY BRIGHTLY all the time. Their light output never changes. On a hazy day, you can even see them glowing like crazy.

They come in different colors as well. I have orange, yellow, and green on my firearms.

I'll try to snap a couple of pics of my sites and luminox watch faces beside my Omega and post them this week.

Check out www.luminox.com, www.trijicon.com, or www.meprolight.com.

I love my GMT, but I have to say that I really miss the glowing of my relatively inexpensive Luminox captain's watch.

Some other watches with tritium vials were Marathon (Cammenga) and a company marketed as TRASER (think they're now defunct).

: Probably not pure tritium, but bound in a
: complex and made into a paste or paint that
: they put on the hands. The sights use gas so
: you can see through it.
