A good website should, as a highest priority, inform. Whatever way the designer chooses to do this is his/her own choice, but it should always still meet the minimum requirement of relaying information in a meaningful and efficient manner.
I like the way this website is organized and I have found it to be one of the most informative websites ever. Perhaps if I were looking for music, movie, multimedia, etc. would I want to see a heavy multimedia based site. Otherwise, a site should get straight to the point and make it easy for a user to discover what he/she is looking for.
