I bought a GMT (2538.20) recently. For me, there was never any doubt. I used to travel around quite a bit and I really wanted that function. I don't travel so much now, but I still love that feature.
I have had "dive watches" in the past and since I never get lower than a snorkel, That cool bezel never did much for me (aside maybe timing meat on the grill). When I first started looking around, I didn't really know much about Omega. I had always been exposed to Rolex and Tudor. Anyway, I started looking around on the net and decided I really liked the Omega GMT.
I like the white face on my watch, but I can see where some might find it less interesting. Some have also complained about it being hard to read because of a lack of contrast. I haven't had that problem, but my previous watch had a very similar color scheme.
While I think the white is dressier, maybe the GMT with the black face would suit you better?
Maybe someody can confirm this: While the GMT doesn't have a helium release valve (the only time I get close to helium is when I buy my kid a baloon) I think it is still rated at the same depth as the SMP (300m). If I ever get that deep, an exploding watch will be the least of my worries =)
Go to your local dealer and try some on. Who knows, you might come home with an X-33. Just buy something that pleases you, don't worry about everyone else.
BTW, are you saying the GMT is a limited item, or it's just one of their new watches?

I plan to purchase a new Omega and am
: struggling between the GMT and SMP. The GMT
: seems a bit more clean and dressy and the
: GMT function is an advantage, while the SMT
: is a bit more interesting looking with the
: classic dive watch style. Also there is the
: helium release valve, which will come in
: handy (not) The GMT is also more unusual,
: being only available a few years. What do
: you all think andy why?
