Hi, I can speak about durability, not longevity (I've only owned the 3510.50 for a few months).
As you pointed out the 'crystal' is, indeed, plastic. AFAIK this is not an uncommon material for flight/pilot's watches. As the other fellow pointed out, a plastic crystal will not shatter if it breaks. Thus, one need not worry about shards of glass in the cockpit. Rest assured, the use of the plastic crystal is intentional and serves as a safety precaution. It was not simply chosen b/c it is less expensive than sapphire.
Re: bumps and scuffs. I haven't had any buffs/scuffs on my Reduced in the last 4 months or so of regular use. I have, however, had serious scuffs and bumps on the plastic crystal on my 1986 AirKing (also, a watch designed, at one time, for pilots and/or air travelers). I have learned that a little BRASSO on a clean t-shirt does wonders to remove scuffs. Others have spoken highly of POLYWATCH. I will use either product (probably BRASSO) as soon as I put a big ugly white mark on my Reduced.
Do give this watch serious consideration. IMHO it is one of the finest sub 1K (it is not uncommon to see them NIB for less than 1K) wristwatches around.
