First of all, you shouldn't have had to change the time at all to advange the date forward. One of the positions on the crown allows you to advance the date alone. If you have the automatic SMP, it is the second position. On the quartz, I don't remember if it is the second or third. The hour hand should NOT move when using the date change setting.
If you have the quartz SMP, it has an additional setting for advancing the HOUR only. Sounds like you had the crown HALF-WAY between these two settings and it was trying to do both at the same time--which is not the way it is supposed to operate.
