I wouldnt call myself a veteran but I had the same problem with my SMP :-) I ended up scraching part of the bracelet and still not able to get the strap off.

Then I got the First Quality springbar tool from www.ofrei.com and it was small enough to fit really easily in the small space to get to the bar. Hope that info helps!
